“Domestic Tourism in India” is an all-India household survey on domestic tourism (DTS, 2014-15), carried out during the period July 2014 to June 2015 by the National Sample Survey Office (NSSO) as part of its 72nd Round of sample surveys. The first such comprehensive survey on domestic tourism was undertaken by NSSO during the 65th Round (July 2008–June 2009). The information collected in these rounds included the volume of domestic tourism across several leading purposes. The key characteristics included number of visitors, number of households, number of trips and average tourism expenditure by different products and services. The survey canvassed a total of 1,39,688 households.
Click to Access DTS DashboardAn International Passenger Survey (IPS) for the year 2015–16 was conducted by the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), Kolkata. The three board categories of international or inbound tourists surveyed by IPS were Foreign nationals visiting India; Non-resident Indians, visiting India; and Indian residents travelling abroad. These tourists were interviewed at the exit points. The information collected in these rounds included the volume of inbound tourism across types of tourists. The key characteristics included number of tourists and average tourism expenditure by different products and services. The survey canvassed a total of 56687 tourists comprising 46491 inbound tourists and 10196 outbound Indians.
